Luxury handbag house Ownever has introduced a new handmade packaging concept that places Portuguese craftsmanship at the centre of the unboxing experience, transforming what is often considered disposable into an object designed to be treasured.
Rather than creating packaging destined for the bin, the brand has collaborated with two artisans whose traditional skills are becoming increasingly rare. The project brings together contemporary tile artist Salomé Vilar, who created an original artwork exclusively for Ownever, and Estrela Almeida, the last artisan in Portugal dedicated to producing luxury boxes entirely by hand.

The collaboration was inspired by a simple idea: if every Ownever handbag is designed to last, the packaging that welcomes it should embody the same philosophy. Working alongside designer Carlota Batalha, who introduced the brand to Vilar's work, Ownever developed the packaging's visual identity around an original composition inspired by the colours of a historic tile panel at the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis.
Painted on a Portuguese tile, the artwork inside each box portrays three generations – grandmother, mother and granddaughter – reflecting the themes of craftsmanship, memory and pieces created to be cherished and passed down over time.

Each luxury box is handcrafted by Almeida, who has spent almost four decades practising a craft that has all but disappeared in Portugal. Today, she remains the country's last artisan dedicated to producing luxury boxes entirely by hand. Every box takes up to four hours to complete and is assembled piece by piece using traditional techniques that have largely been replaced by industrial production.
"Packaging is often the first thing people throw away," says Eliana Barros, founder of Ownever. "We wanted ours to become the first story people discover."
For Ownever, the project reflects a wider philosophy that luxury should preserve not only exceptional materials, but also the people, skills and cultural heritage behind every product. The result is a packaging experience that celebrates Portuguese culture before the handbag itself is revealed, bringing together contemporary design, heritage and endangered craftsmanship in an object created to be kept long after the unboxing is complete.
