Adidas, a global leader in athletic wear, has taken a significant step towards environmental responsibility by joining forces with Canopy, a non-profit organisation dedicated to forest conservation. The collaboration aims to bolster sustainable practices within the fashion industry and reduce carbon footprint.

The commitment sees Adidas embracing Canopy's CanopyStyle and Pack4Good initiatives, dedicated to eradicating the use of fibre sourced from climate-critical forests in textiles, paper, and paper packaging. This move underscores Adidas' determination to transition towards low-carbon and circular Next Gen alternatives for its products.

Viviane Gut, Adidas Senior Director of Sustainability, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, "Joining with Canopy marks an important stride for Adidas in our evolving journey towards sustainability." Gut emphasised Adidas' commitment to maintaining product quality while driving ecological change.

In addition to sustainable sourcing, Adidas is exploring innovative solutions to reduce waste and reliance on virgin forest fibre. This includes repurposing discarded clothing for viscose production and utilising agricultural residues for paper packaging. These efforts not only mitigate waste but also alleviate pressure on critical forest ecosystems.

Adidas aims to boost the use of recycled materials in its paper packaging and prioritise sourcing from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified forests when virgin forest fibre is unavoidable. Canopy Founder and Executive Director, Nicole Rycroft, stressed the pivotal role of forests in combating climate change and the urgency of transitioning to sustainable alternatives.

Rycroft lauded Adidas' dedication, stating, "Teaming up with Adidas to champion forest protection is a home run for the planet." She emphasised that sustainable alternatives are not merely a warm-up but the main event for industry leaders committed to environmental stewardship.

Forests play a crucial role in maintaining a habitable planet, yet the textile and paper industries contribute significantly to deforestation. Canopy notes that over 3.4 billion trees are felled annually for fabric production and packaging materials. The collaboration between Adidas and Canopy signifies a pivotal moment in the industry's journey towards sustainability.
